Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I save? - Well to save you have to search the castle till you find a room with a floating red orb. Walk under the orb and press up. It will transform into a coffin and you may save. It is the same way in the inverted castle.

2. What is the max percentage you can get in this game? - Well without glitching, which takes a really long time in the XBLA version, you can get 200.6%. Although it will seem impossible sometimes for some people, it can be done.

3. How do I play as Richter? - Beat the game with 170% or more and enter a begin a new file and name your character "Richter."

4. How long does this game take to complete the first time? - Well if your a first timer it will take you maybe 12-20 hours if your familiar with the genre. Experts and speed runners can beat it in shorter times that 45 minutes.

5. What is the percentage to complete a game? - You have to have 170% when you fight Dracula.

6. Can you do anything after you beat the game? - Yes, you can start a new game as Richter, or just play the same file as Alucard. As Alucard, you can try and beat old times on bosses or even get those last few items your missing.

7. Can I play as Maria? - No you can't. That was in the Sega Saturn version of the game. No Maria in this version.

8. I beat the game, but I didn't get to the inverted castle everyone is talking about. Why? - Well you just beat the first castle by killing Richter. If you want the inverted castle you need to get the gold and silver ring to open up the floor in the clock room. Meet Maria again and she will give you the holy glasses. Wear them in the fight with Richter and you will see an orb. Destroy the orb and you will get into the inverted castle.

9. Can I get back to the regular castle once I unlock the inverted? - Yes, just go back to the Castle Keep and press up where you transported from to begin with.

10. I think I missed a boss in the regular castle, but I'm in the inverted now, can I still go back and fight them? - Yes, just teleport back and go to the location.

11. Do glitches still work? - Some do, and some don't. See my Castlevania Experiment to see which ones still work and which ones don't.

12. How do you keep Alucard's equipment? - Well once you beat the game (Some say in the XBLA version you don't need to beat it first) start a game with X-X!V''Q as your name. Fight through the first two rooms as Alucard. In the room before death and past the room with the Mermen and the big rock you can go through, there are Wargs. Jump over the first warg without getting hit. Go into your menu and unequip everything but the Alucard Shield, Twilight Cloak, and Lapiz Luizi.(There are many different versions of this trick. You can sometimes get it to work with different equipment on. This works the best.) Turn around but don't get hit by the warg until he charges you. You will fly past the room with death and keep your equipment. As soon as you save, you will be able to open up your inventory again. Here is a video I made on how to do it.

13. How do I buy things? - You have to go to the librarian to purchase items. He is in the long library near the outer wall.

14. How do I get through the blue doors? - You have to get the Jewel of Open from the Librarian.

15. How do I get past the spikes in the Royal Chapel? - You have to get the spike breaker armor. It's in the bottom right past the abandoned mines.

16. How do I open the Merman Room? - You have to turn into a wolf and jump on top of the big rock you can walk through. Then when you get to the end, jump and turn into a bat in midair. Fly through the rock and then down to the corner and the door will be open. You do it the same way in the inverted. Just play around with it. Here is a video I made on how to do it.

17. How do I open the Gear room in the clock tower? - There are 4 different gears in both rooms. You have to hit each gear till you heat it click. It will make big clanks every time you hit it. If you hit it again after it clicks, you need to start over. Once you do that to all 4 the door will be open. Here is a video I made on how to do this.

18. How do I open up the right passage of the clock room? - You have to use the clock subweapon to slow down time. It will then open.

19. I'm in the inverted castle, but I cant get the clock room floor to open up. - You have to collect all of the pieces of Vlad to open it up.

20. I keep dying! Why is this so hard?!?! - Well the chances are that you need to level up some before fighting the bigger bosses. Also, try to keep an eye on what weapons and armor your using. When you find something new, look and see how it stacks up to the gear you already don.

21. How the heck and I supposed to beat Galamoth? - Well if you want to beat him, you need to wear the Beryl Circlet. It converts lightning damage to health. Then just watch out for his stomp.

22. Where is the Crissaegrim? - You have to go to the inverted library and kill schmoos. If you where all of the Alucar*T* gear, it will be faster as well as wearing a ring of Arcana.

23. How do I unlock the Duplicator? - You have to beat the game with at least 170% and then it will be available with the librarian on the same file, or a new one.

24. How do the leaderboards work? - They are based on how fast you got 200.6% and beat the game. The top slots are reserved for modders and cheaters, so don't sweat it.

25. How do I fill in those last few block in the inverted castle? They are in the water and I can't get to them. - You have to superjump into the water and transform into a wolf. Press Y as the wolf and he will swim. Just swim across the top until you get it all filled in.

26. How do I push the button in the floating catacombs? - You have to use your demon or fairie familiar to press the button. Have them equipped before you go in and once you do, they will notice it.

27. How many endings are there and how do I get them? - Worst Ending: Kill Richter while wearing the holy glasses. Bad Ending: Kill Richter without the holy glasses. Good Ending: Beat Dracula with less than 170% completed. Best Ending: Beat the Dracula with above 170% complete.

28. Where is the mist form? - To get the Mist form, you must first get into the Coliseum. When you're there, go up and around a red elevator shaft platform. Once on top of it, do a double jump over to the Mist form, without touching the switch. If you touch the switch, the bottom will open, making it harder to grab the Mist form.

29. What regular enemy gives you the most EXP? - The guardians give you the most experience. They are in the inverted castle right outside the clock room.

30. What is the best equipment in the game? - Well there isn't a real answer to this. It's all your personal opinion and fighting style. However, the Crissaegrim is very popular for it's fast attacks and power. The shield rod + Alucar*D* shield combo is also very effective.

31. How do I use the Alucar*D* Shield + Shield Rod Combo? - You have to have both of them equipped, and then press B and X at the same time. You will see all of the shields come up and disappear. Hold out Alucard's shield and it will do insane damage. It will kill Dracula in less than ten seconds depending on your level.

32. What is the Alucar*T* Trick? - Once you find all of the Alucar*T* gear (Sword, shield, mail) wear them all at the same time. It will change your name to Alucar*T* in the menu and will also give you a luck bonus.

33. Where is the Sword Familiar? - You have to break through a section of Olrox's Quarters, using either the Bible, or something that hits the whole room. You can also jump up and hit it. This is located in a room with a white arch at the top, and nothing else.(Under the room where you actually fight Olrox.)

34. Can you get the Fairie 2 and Demon 2 Cards? - No, they were taken out of this game. You could see them on the PSX if you were good with a gameshark and writing your own code for it.

35. What is the easiest way to level up my familiars? - You can go to the beginning of the game in the normal castle with all of the zombies. If you have a turbo controller and don't mind leaving your console on all night, you can do this. Put Alucard with his back to the steps and put turbo on the sword hand. Equip the familiar you want to level up, and put something on the turbo button. This way Alucard will be swinging his sword and hitting zombies. This will level up the familiars. Once they get to a certain level (excluding the fairie) they will begin attacking them before they can even get to you. Turn off the TV and Stereo and go to bed. When you wake up, they the familiar will be level 99.

36. Do I still have to have my sword familiar up to level 99 to do the money glitch? - No, in the XBLA version you can do the sword bros spell as soon as you get the sword. In the PSX you cannot do the sword bros spell until you have gotten it to level 90+.

37. How do I get the Spikebuster Armor? - To get the Spikebuster Armor, you must first go into the Catacombs. To get here, you must go to the groundwater vein right above a wooden platform with both a Life and Heart Max Up right below. Move over to the left slowly, and you will find an ape with a barrel. Lure the ape slowly over to the wooden plank by walking, and when he’s close, close the gap between him and the plank, and he’ll throw the barrel right over you, hopefully breaking the wood. Go down, and you’ll eventually right your way around and to the Spikebuster Armor, which is on the right side of the Catacombs, around a twist.

38. Where is the wolf form? - This is in the outer wall (right side of the map) in the elevator. You have to go up to the top and hit the lever to start the elevator then it's yours.

39. Where is the poison mist form? - This is in the inverted castle in the room after you fight Galamoth.

40. Where is the Bat Form? - This is in the regular library. While going down the steps to see the librarian, you will see platforms above the stairs. Use the leap stone to get up here. Travel through and explore. After a boss fight there will be a grate you need to mist through. Do so, and the Bat Form is yours.

41. What is the strongest armor? - Well in the description of the God's Garb armor it says it's the strongest of all armor, but that is not correct. When you find the walk armor, equip it immediately. As you explore the map, you will get more defense on it.

42. Does the walk armor/save room glitch still work? - No it does not work in the XBLA version.

43. Why can't I cast Wolf Charge, Wing Smash, and The Sword Bros Spell? - Those require the appropriate relics to cast. Wolf charge you need skill of wolf. Wing smash you need the bat card, and Sword Bros you need the sword card.

44. How do I open up the teleport room in the beginning of the castle?- Go up to the wall with the switch behind it. Once you do this, this will register as you have found that room. Go to another teleport room and teleport until you end up there. Go out and press the button.

45. How do I get under the wooden bridge in the caverns? - You have to go all the way left of the bridge to the waterfall. Fly straight across and there will be a switch, wooden floor, and the Herald shield under the floor. Press the button and an Ape Skeleton will appear and throw his barrel. Go all the way right past the wooden bridge and into the next screen. Go back to the left until you see the Ape Skeleton's head. Keep his head in the left side of your screen without getting close. Lure him back to the bridge. When he is a few feet in front of the bridge, run towards him so he throws the barrel. Don't let it hit you. It will roll on top of the bridge and blow up. Now you can get down to the abandoned mines.

46. How do I start the game off with the Axelord Armor? - You can start off the game with the Axelord armor if you simply input "AXELORD" as your name when you start a new game. You can also get this armor by super-jumping (Down, Up + A) under the librarian multiple times.

47. Where is the Alucard Shield? - The Alucard Shield is in the inverted castle. It is across the courtyard to the left of the Olrox fight in the normal castle. It will be above the save room on the left wall.

48. How do I get the gold and silver rings? - The gold ring is in the Succubus room. You have to kill her and it will be on the floor when you wake up. She is located on the way down to the caverns. The silver ring is in the spiked corridor in the royal chapel.

49. I get to this bridge in the top right of the map and it falls when I try to cross. Am I supposed to be somewhere else or what? - Well, yes, you are in the wrong spot at this time. Although it is possible to make it across this early, it is very difficult and is not the way you are supposed to go. You need to go to the library and purchase the Jewel of Open. Then you will be able to pass through the glowing blue doors. Once you have the Jewel of Open go to the Clock Room (Middle of the Map) and head left past the room where you fought Slogra and Gaibon. You are heading to the Royal Chapel. Once you get there, you should be able to figure it out.

50. How do I open the Gear Room in the Clock Tower? - You have to hit the gears on the walls up until the click. If you hit them too many times you will have to start over. I made a video to show exactly how to do this. Here is the video.

51. Why am I starting the game on the final level? - You are not really starting at the last level of SOTN. The game is designed to do this. What you play at the beginning of SOTN is really the last part of Rondo of Blood.

52. Exactly how much percentage can I get from each castle? - The first castle has exactly 100%. The second castle has exactly 100.6%. Checking the percentage of the first castle is kind of hard (If you want to be sure to have exactly 100% before moving on to the Inverted) because you will have to go to the Inverted Castle, get to a save room, save, and then check. So, you will then have to deduct the percentage you have from the Inverted Castle to figure it out. Each square, or room, counts for .1%.

Prolouge

It was Richter Belmont, the legendary vampire hunter, who succeeded in finally ending the menace of Count Dracula, Lord of the Vampires who had been brought back from the grave by the dark priest Shaft.

However, one night 4 years later, under the glare of a full moon, Richter mysteriously vanished.

With no idea of where to begin her search, Maria Renard set out to look for him. It was then that fate intervened. Castlevania, the castle of Dracula, which is rumored to appear once every century, suddenly materialized from out of the mist as if to show her the way.

Meanwhile, powerful forceswere struggling for the soul of a man named Alucard. The very same Alucard who had teamer up with Trevor Belmont to battle his immortal father, Count Vlad Tepes Dracula.

Alucard, in order to purge the world of his own cursed blood line, had submerged his vampiric powers and entered into what was supposed to be an eternal slumber. But now, he is awake and aware of the evil once again at work in his homeland.

The time had once again come for the forces of Good and Evil to engage in their ancient battle. Dracula's castle beckons you.

And no man can say who shall emerge victorious.

Characters

Alucard (Shows Picture)

(Real Name: Adrian Farenheights Tepes) Age: Estimated to be 400 years old

The offspring of an unnatural union between Count Dracula and a human woman, Alucard possesses inhuman strength and dark magical powers. His weapon of choice is a sword, and he uses a variety of them to meet his needs. He is an adept shapeshifter, commonly using the form of wolf, bat, and mist to confuse and terrify his opponents. Alucard also relies heavily on ancient relics and magical items to perform elaborate magical attacks.

Richter Belmont (Shows Picture)

Age: 24

Every generation of the Belmont clan has produced tougher, more dedicated vampire hunter-- yet Richter stands above all others. Brandishing the legendary sacred whip which so many of his predecessors wielded, this hot-booded youth pushed Dracula to the brink. Then, with an almost indestructable will to survive and emerge victorious, Richter defeated Dracula in a massive battle five years ago. However, he has been missing for a year-- vanishing mysteriously under the light of a full moon.

Maria Renard (Shows Picture)

Age: 17

As Richter's sister-in-law, Maria is not of Belmont blood, but she has the fiery determination of a vampire hunter coursing through her veins. She aided Richter 5 years ago in the defeat of Dracula, and has vowed to find him now that he has vanished. Shortly after the beginning of her search, however, the ancient Castlevania returned to the earthly plane. Fearlessly, she entered the castle alone.

Death (Shows Picture)

This evil spirit is an ally of Dracula's, which should come as a suprise to no one familiar with the Count's nocturnal activities.

Master Librarian (Picture Shown)

He is the keeper of the library in Dracula's castle. He has accumulated a wealth of knowledge over the centuries, and some special items, as well, which he will part with-for a price.

Count Dracula (Shows Picture)

(Real Name: Dracula Vlad Tepes) Age: Estimated to be 800 years old

He has been known by many names through the ages, but no matter what you choose to call him, one truth remains: he is the embodiment of all that is dark and evil. He is the father of Alucard and the master of Castlevania, the dark castle steeped in terror and black magic. It is said to appear on the human plane of existence once every 100 years. Though Richter destroyed Castlevania and it's evil landlord five years ago, it has reappeared without warning.

Lisa (Shows Picture)

Alucard's mother and Dracula's wife. She is the only woman Dracula has ever loved, yet for some reason he had chosen not to take away her human form and bring her over to the dark ranks of the vampire. She was a good, kind-hearted soul who was mistakenly executed as a witch for preparing medicine to help the sick.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night Rules

You are Alucard Raging through you is the hunger and bloodlust of your vampire father, and the gentle, empathetic compassion of your human mother. As you have tried to come to terms with that constant internal struggle, you have recognized an outer struggle as well-the need to destroy Castlevania and bury the demons both within the castle and within your soul.

On your mission, you will discover ancient relics that will open new paths to you. Hidden weapons and magical items from a time long forgotten will be uncovered. Some weapons and items have restricted use-you must earn "hearts" to enable them.

As your quest continues, you will encounter myriad monsters and dark forces who will challenge your progress. Every victory gives you experience, which yields power and strength. Gradually, you will be able to face and defeat stronger and stronger foes. When you recieve damage, you lose some of your life force. Because you are half human, you can be defeated more easily than your father. If your life drains to zero, the Start screen will reappear, and (if you have saved a game in progress) you can resume play from the last saved location.

Page 17

Items

There are four kinds of items Alucard uses: normal items, equipment items, relics, and special items.

Normal items

Itmes may appear when you defeat enemies and destroy candles. These items will increase your power.

(Picture of Hearts) Small/Large heart: The number of times you can use special weapons will increase.

(Picture of Dollar Bags) Dollar bags: You can increase the amount of money you have by getting dollar bags.

Equipment items

Equipment items such as weapons, armor, and accessories will increase your attack or defense power. Other equipment items include medicine, food, and potions. The equipment screen is vital to your success in the game. Here you can switch and equip the various items found throughout the castle. Use the Directional buttons to scroll up and down through the "Equip Areas" (Right hand, left hand, head, etc.). Press the "X" button to select an "Equip Area", then use the Directional buttons to scroll through your possible items. Note: Be sure to read the ATTACK and DEFENSE abilities of each item (if available). This will help you choose the right weapon/item at the right time. When you have made your selection, press the "X" button to equip it.

Circle+Square buttons

These represent the Left and Right hands of Alucard. Each hand can be equipped separately. For example a sword can be equipped in one hand and a shield in the other. Some items require both hands so you will not be hold (typo) anything else when using these items. Certain items like the shuriken are expendable and can only be used once. Items such as food and medicine must be equipped and used by pressing the appropriate button.

Types of weapons

1.Fist Weapons: Only effective within close range.

2.Short Swords: Effective within close to medium range.

3.Swords: Basic single handed swords.

4.Two-handed Swords: These are powerful weapons with a long reach. HJowever, both hands are required to wield these weapons properly.

5.Club Weapons: Some enemies are easier to defeat with these types of weapons.

Some equipment can work together to create a tremendous special attack. Experiment with different combos when acquiring new items.

Relics

Relics are items that let you use special powers and effects. They are hidden in various rooms throughout the castle. There are some rooms you cannot enter unless you obtain a particular relic. When you obtain a relic, go to "Relics" in the sub screen and check whether it is ON/OFF and what effect it has. If a relic is set to OFF it will have no effect.

(Picture of Cube of Zoe) Cube of Zoe: The first relic you find. When activated, this relic will allow items to appear when you destroy candles.

(Picture of Leap Stone) Leap Stone: Press the X button while jumping to execute a second jump.

(Picture of Soul of Bat) Soul of Bat: Enables you to change into a bat. Consumes magic power.

(Picture of Soul of Wolf) Soul of Wolf: Enables you to change into a wolf. Consumes magic power.

(Picture of Form of Mist) Form of Mist: Enables you to change into mist. Consumes magic power.

*There are many other relics; these are just a few of them.

Special weapons

You can only possess one special weapon at a time. When you pick up a new one of these "special weapons", the old one will be tossed aside. It will remain on the screen for a moment before vanishing, so that you may retrieve it if you change your mind about which item you'd like to possess. You will need to use some of your "hearts" to use these weapons. The number of hearts needed depends on the weapon.

(Pic)Bottle of Holy Water: When thrown, fire springs up in the place it lands, causing damage.

(Pic)Holy Book: Unleashing the holy words in these books causes damage to your evil opponents.

(Pic)Knife: Use to attack enemies in front of you. The knife is fast but not very powerful.

(Pic)Rebound Stone: A special stone that rebounds from the floor or walls when it hits them.

(Pic)Bibuti: The embodiment of holy ashes created by a saint. Damages any enemies that it touches.

(Pic)Axe: An effective weapon to throw at enemies if you want to cause damamge from a distance. Very effective against flying enemies.

(Pic)Cross: The most powerful Special weapon, attacks all enemies on screen.

(Pic)Clock: Stops time for enemies. However, there are some enemies on which it has little or no effect.

(Pic)Agunea: Strikes enemies with sacred lighting. When it hits, you can continue the attack by holding down the attack button until all of your hearts are gone.

Special Note:

Certain Weapons have an additiona effect when attacking enemies. Some effects such as Fire, Ice, or Poison may do additional damage.

Spells

The ancient castle has been used for dark purposes for eons. The magic contained inside it is powerful. You may learn some of the spells during your quest. Casting the spells is a trial and error process. Use the SPELLS submenu (in the Character Status screen) to select spells. Casting them consumes magic power, but not "hearts". Spells are not necessary to accomplish your mission, but they may make some tasks easier.

Familiars and Their Functions

Level 99 Demon- The lvl 99 Demon has use to an array of elemental spears, such as: Lighting, Ice, and Fire. He attacks fairly often, but only one at a time and does not always use the spear that fits that particular enemy's weakness. He will also hit switches. Not as useful as hoped...

Level 99 Faerie- The lvl 99 Faerie is very useful in boss fights where you plan to take heavy damage... When you get hurt to a certain point, she will start using your heal items and throwing them at you. She will continue to heal you until you run out of items. Like I said, very useful if you plan on taking damage. She as well as the Demon will point out hidden areas.

Level 99 Ghost- The lvl 99 Ghost packs a pretty powerful punch. He as the Demon, only attacks one enemy at a time and deals only general damage.

Level 99 Sword- The lvl 99 Sword is by far the most effective and the most powerful of the familiars. When you first get the sword he is stubborn and rude. As you level him up, you will see his form change as well as his attitude. If you want to hear his attitude, turn him off, then back on and don't move. He will talk if you remain still as do the other familiars with the exception of the ghost. At level 99 his hilt will bow down and he will fly in and out of the background to attack many enemies at once or just deal one powerful strike to a large enemy.

Level 99 Bat- The lvl 99 Bat is one of the weaker familiars at first glance. The unique aspect of this familiar comes when you turn into your bat form. Once in this form, if you fire a fireball, he will fire as well. As you level the bat familiar up, more bats will become available when you turn into a bat and all of them will deliver a fireball as well...

Level 99 Tengu Demon (JP ONLY)- The Tengu Demon is exactly identical to the demon found in the American version except for cosmetics. The Tengu Demon features a mask with a large nose to resemble the Tengu in Japanese culture.

Level 99 Pixie (JP ONLY)- Like the Tengu Demon, the Pixie is the same as the Faerie but with slight cosmetic differences. The Pixie features a more bland color scheme and in the Saturn version, if Alucard stood still she would sit on his should and sing. Unfortunately, this was dropped with the PSX version and thus was dropped for the XBLA version.
